Fifty miles S. W. of Paris. On Stanley's stage-line from Portland, thirty-five
miles, to Freedom, N. H.; and terminus of line to Wakefield, N. H., on Gt. F. &
C. R. R. Formerly called Porterfield Plantation. Settled about 1781, and named
for Dr. Aaron Porter, of Biddeford. Incorporated Feb. 20, 1807. Population-1800,
272; 1850, 1208; 1860, 1240; 1870, 1104; 1880, 1095. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 270;
Estates, $186,204; 1870-Polls, 275; Estates, $275,469; 1880-Polls, 307; Estates,
$279,359.
