DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM M. RAND compiled by D. A. Hall and David C. Young October 11. 1993 1. Williarn M. Rand was born October 24, 1801 in Poland or Paris, Maine to Lazarus and Elizabeth (Clark) Rand. (Sherman, Maine vital records suggest that it was October 24, 1801 in Poland while Woodstock, Maine vital records suggest it was October 24, 1800). He was raised in the Dunham neighborhood in the eastern part of Woodstock, Maine. His parents were probably moving from Poland to Woodstock at the time of his birth and it is not clear where he was born. His father died when William was about age sixteen in 1816 and the overseers of the poor allowed his mother and older brother used of land in Woodstock for the specific tasks of clearing the land after his father had died. It is believed that William's mother, Betsey (Elizabeth Clark) Rand, died in Minot on February 24, 1839- It is believed that he married twice: (1) Rebecca Crockett and (2) Abigail Sawtelle, who he married in about 1828. Abigail is believed to have been born in August, 1802, in Minot, Maine, the daughter of Nehemiah and Mary (or Polly) (Haskell). William and Abigail were living in Durham, Maine, for the 1850 federal census, probably in the vicinity of Bowie Hill. They were living in Auburn, Maine, for the 1860 federal census. In the 1830's and 1840's they appear to have lived in Danville (now a part of Auburn, Maine) or nearby Poland, Maine according to their children's birth records. William does not appear to be in the 1830 or 1840 federal census as heading a household. Perhaps he was living with his Sawtelle in-laws in the Minot/Poland area. (It is not believed that he was the William in Canaan, Maine or Eastport, Maine). It is believed that the Sawtelle farm was near the Minot, Auburn-Poland boundary. They probably went to Sherman (Golden Ridge area) in Aroostook County, Maine is about 1861. Diarist Alfred Cushman suggests that they were there about 1860 and Androscoggin County deeds suggest that they were selling land or discharging mortages in early 1861 for land located in Auburn or Minot, Maine. William died January 20, 1876, nearly three years after his wife, Abigail (Sawtelle) Rand died on April 24, 1873. It is believed they both were in Sherman when they died.
