Twenty-five miles N. W. of Bangor, on daily stage-line. Once called New
Charleston. First settled in 1795, by Chas. Vaughn. Incorporated Feb. 16, 1811.
Population-1850, 1283; 1860,1430; 1870, 1191; 1880,1110. Valuation, 1860-Polls,
308; Estates, $213,465; 1870-Polls, 330; Estates, $290,279; 1880-Polls, 293;
Estates, $277,883.
