LOWELL.

Forty-eight miles N. N. E. of Bangor; and eight miles from Maine Central
Railroad. First settled in 1819, by Alpheus Hayden and Levi Doane, of Canaan,
Somerset county. Incorporated Feb'y 9, 1837. In 1841, the legislature annexed to
Lowell what was called the strip, north of township No. 1, Bingham's Penobscot
Purchase. Population-1850, 378; 1860, 557; 1870, 448; 1880. 433. Valuation,
1860-Polls, 127; Estates, $64,383; 1870-Polls,109; Estates, $72,126; 1880-Polls,
116; Estates, $65,406.
