Harmony- Castle Harmony The East Somerset County Register 1911-12 Compiled and Published by Chatto & Turner Auburn, Maine Clarence I. Chatto; Clair E. Turner page 118-119 Castle Harmony. Well know throughout the county and State is the Wild Goose Club, although now constituted mostly of out of State people. The limit of membership is thirty-five, membership being elective with an entrance fee of $150. It pays a tax in Harmony on building and land of $150. This club is an out- growth of an organization know as the Madawaska Club which consisted on and association of Massachusetts men who came to Pittsfield abut 1865 for duck, quail and deer shooting. Several of these men later came to Harmony and built a club house at the present Castle Harmony. Among the early members of the club were Gen. A. O. Davidson, Wm. E. French, A. Linn of Hartland, Addison Putnam, Henry Hasting, Ed- ward Hastings and Dr. Pushor of Hartland. Maine members of the club today are: T. Linn of Hartland, D. D. Stewart, Esq. of St. Albans and Judge J. H. Appleton of Bangor. The club owns about 1500 acres of land adjoining the lake, running north and east. The present keeper of the Castle, W. C. Harvey, has been here since the founding of the club with the exception of one year. Pidgeon hunting drew the club to Harmony and the loca- tion of old pidgeon beds may still be seen. The process by which the pidgeons were netted was by use of a spring net. One year 2300 were netted, or seven beds were kept in con- stant use. The club has done much for fishing in the lake by supporting a salmon hatchery on Mainstream for several years. Many Indian relics are found about the point and up stream. Indians from Penobscot tribe have hunted here until recent years in springtime. Jos. Bachelder was the first keeper of the Castle. After his term, W. F. Sanford was keeper for eight years, with which time W. Harvey has been in charge.
