Turner pages 21-22 History of Athens INCORPORATION In the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four. An Act to incorporate the township number two, in the second range of townships north of the Plymouth claim, commonly called Kinsmantown, on the eastern side of the Kennebec River in the County of Kennebec into a Town by the name of Athens. Sect. 2. Be it enacted by the Senate and the House of Rep- resentatvies in general Court assembled and by the authority of Townships North of the Plymouth claim, and commonly called Kinsmantown on the eastern side of the Kennebec River in the County of Kennebec, as described within the following bounds, with the inhabitants thereon be and they are hereby incorporated into a Town by the name of Athens; viz: bounded East by the Town of Harmony, South by the Town of Cornville and Number three, West by Spauldingtown or Number one, and North by the million acres owned by William Bingham, Esq., and the said town of Athens is hereby vested with all the powers, privileges, rights, and immunities with which other Towns are vested by the Constitution and Laws of the Common- wealth. Bryce McLellan, Justice of the Peace, issued a warrant to Jonathan Kinsman, and the first town meeting was held at the dwelling house of Clement Bunker, May 7, 1804. In a later town meeting held May 21, it was "Voted that Corn, Rye and Wheat shall be currency to pay the sum Voted for the present year." In November of the same year a meet- ing was held at the house of Jabez Bradley.
