East Somerset County Register, 1911-1912 - Athens: SOMERSET ACADEMY. Compiled and Published by CHATTO & TURNER Auburn, Maine Clarence I. Chatto Clair E. Turner pages 32-33 SOMERSET ACADEMY. The building in which Somerset Academy is located was erected in 1846, by private subscription, about $1300 being raised for the purpose. The petition far the incorporation of the Academy was signed by John Ware, Eben Hutchinson, David Palmer, John Tufts, Joseph Patten, James S. Tobey, George Bixby, all of whom were subscribers to the building fund. The act of incorporation was passed by the legislature June 19 and 20, 1846, and was approved by the governor, H J. Andrews, June 22. On July 8 the board of trustees, numbering nine, met in the office of Charles Greene, and the following of- ficers were chosen: President, Hon. Chas. Greene; Vice Presi- dent, Hon. Cleophas Boyd; Secretary, Ebenezer Hutchinson; Treasurer, Maj. John Ware. The building was modeled after the plan of the Bloomfield Academy, its dimensions being 40 by 32 ft. The first school in the new building was taught by, Samuel Bickford of Skowhegan, with Heavy Neil for assistant, and more than one hundred students attended at that time. Some of the well known educators of Maine have taught there in later years. The school at present has about 35 or 40 students and offers both a college preparatory and an English course. It has a chemical and physical laboratory and offers a year's course in each subject. A good athletic ground is possessed by the school and is in a convenient location. The present board of trustees has the following officers: Pres., I. C. Williams; Vice Pres., M. J. Hight; Sec., G. C. Hight; Treas., W. N. Sanders. The principal, Mr. Fred Lovejoy, A. B., is a graduate of Bates College in the class of 1909. The assistant, Miss Rich- ards, is a graduate of Castine Normal School and Bates College. This school has been of unestimable benefit to this and sur- rounding towns in the furnishing of teachers for the last fifty years.
