His work can be found in the Maine State Library In Augusta, Me. Major Joseph Moore & His Descendants 929.2, M 82Si, by Sinnett This is an unpublished work, but It might be located In other libraries. 304 Bloomfield Rd. Sebastopol, Calif. 95472 Jan. 28, 1974 David Young 7 Western Ave. Fairfield, Me. 04937 Dear Mr. Young The Sept. '73 Genealogical Helper list you as an amateur genealogist. I have two grandfathers who are buried in Norridgewock. Could you please find out for me, without too much expense if their graves are marked as their being Revolutionary War soldiers ? Major John Moore (1731 - 1809) and his son Goff Moore (1760- 1850) came to Maine in 1780 from New Bedford, N.H. I found a lovely small book in a Library here called NORRIDGEW0CK, published in 1848 (sic) 1849. Books might check: 929.2 B M819 Very Truly, Wanada Brown, Mrs. Ivan H. Brown Moor, Major John, by Steward, A. W. ( A sketch of the life & military service of John Moor of Bedford and Derryfield, N.H.) printed in Norrid. & Anson, Me. 1916 The Blaisdell Family National Association Mr, David C, Young 7 Western Ave. Fairfield, Me. 04937 Dear David, Thanks for the correction of speling of the Buckley children's names. We all make mistakes in typing and in reading off the material. It is quite easy to do. I am a very poor typist, I keep thinking that I should do more practicing, but there always seems to be something else to do. I contacted a lady who probably knows more about the history of Norridgewock than any one else in town. She said there was a monument dedicated to Major John Moore & wife in 1904. In fact there were about 100 descendants there. It is in the Old Oak cemetery, which is on the north side of the river. One crosses the bridge and at the end of the bridge, turn right, The cemetery is about 1/4 of a mile on the road, and the monument in question is very near the road It is a dark granite monument, and instead of being set square, it is set "Kitty-cornered". Goffe is not buried in this cemetery, but both of them are listed as being at Bunker Hill battle in the Rev. War, If the person who asked about this would care to write to Miss Elizabeth Miller, Norridgewock, Me, R.F.D., 049579 Miss Miller could give her additional information. Miss Miller has been requested by the Maine Old Cemetery Association to try to find all Rev. soldiers in Somerset County, John Moore moved to North Anson, and Goffe may be buried there. She has someone in North Anson who is to help her, so she will probably have an answer a little later, There are descendants of the Moore family (which was a large family) living in town. "Sprague's Journal" or History has a lot about the Moore family but Miss Miller could not say off-hand which volume, John Moore's grave is decorated with a flag, but she was not sure about the marker. My husband's family seems to have come from around Hamden. I have not done much on that. His grandmother Smith was a Towle, and can be traced back to Philip Towle who was a 16-- immigrant. There is a Harold 0. Smith, Mercer, ME who has done alot on his family, If Annah Moore was in the Norridgewock-Mercer area, I would think Albion Smith might be more likely to fit is Harold's family, He teaches school but I cant say exactly where, however, his summer home is Mercer, and he was born and brought up there, so I am sure a letter would be forwarded, Hope this will give you some leads. In Volume 131 page 81 lass Lillie Lela Moore included in her lineage ( some of which is mine, too) a Private John Hume who served in Capt. Timothy Foster's Company, Lincoln County, Maine. Your Sinnett paper says he came from Berwick, Scotland, which opens another field of research. I have sent to the DAR office in Washington, D. C. for his papers. I hope some day to find his grave. Enclosed is a copy of two pages from the Umpqua Trapper, Vol V111 No. 2 which you might find interesting. I would be only too willing to make copies for you of any of the material I have. I wish to thank you again for the Charles N. Sinnett papers in October, 1974. Up until that time all I had of our Moore family was the death certificate of E. M. Moore, my great grandfather which I needed for proof to join the DAR through his first wife, Nancy E. Williams. My DAR number is 565577 under the name, Wanada Aldrich Brown. If you are doing a paper on genealogy for school, I hope you get an "A". Sincerely, W Brown P.S. I have no Court House records from Maine. I wrote to the Somerset County Probate Office in Skowhegan, but they answered that they had no records for the estate of John White Moore, born March 9, 1793 in Norridgewock or Madison (the two places Goff Moore lived) and died in Solon on Dec. 28, 1859.
