Be it remembered, that on this twenty second day of August A. D. 1839 before A. L. Raymond Esquire Clerk of the Judicial Courts within and for the County of Washington a foresaid personally appears Michael Flaherty of Machias in the County of Washington and by this his declaration represents that he was born at Parish of Stratbally in the County of Queen in Ireland in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twelve under allegiance to the King of Great Britain and Ireland that he come from Ireland on the twenty second day of April A. D. 1832 and on the eleventh day of June A. D. 1832 arrived at Machias in the County of Washington where he has ever since continued to reside with intention of making the same his settled place of residence and he here on oath declares that it was bona fide his intention to become a Citizen of the United States and renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever and particularly all allegiance and fidelity to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland whose natural born subject he is and he thereupon prays that this his declaration of Intention may be received and recorded and a certificate thereof granted so that in due time he may be admitted as Citizen of said States according to the laws of the same.
