Dill) Drowning Accident About 8 o'clock Tuesday evening George Mitchell, of Harrington, while trying to clear away an anchor on board the schooner Jane H. Crowley, of Machias, off Cape Elizabeth, lost his balance and fell overboard. As the man could not swim and the night very dark, it was impossible to save him, though the captain, A.L. Cotton, spared no exertions to that end. The sch was from New York bound for Calais. Local and Miscellaneous Items Col. John W. Forney died at Philadelphia Dec 9 aged 64. He was well as usual two days previous to his death. Louis Ketcham, an Oldtown Indian, lately killed a bear on Machias river and took it to Bangor. The carcass weighed 140 lbs. Mr. Charles E. Soule Jr., died at Morrisana, NY, Nov 19 aged 30 years. He leaves a widow, a daughter (Jessie) of the late S.A. Morse Jr. of Machias. The town of Lamoine has several aged people. Hazen Whittaker, aged 90; Benj. Huckins, 84; Francis DesIsle, 80 and Mrs. Lydia Gilpatrick, 82; all hale and smart and show but little infirmities of years. Cyrus Elsmore, one of his sons and another man fell through the ice in Hadley's Lake evening of Dec 14 and had a hard scrabble to get out. They had crossed the same place in the early part of the day. Mrs. Margaret Dickey, widow of the late Wm. Dickey, of Monroe, died Dec 2d, at the age of 91 years. Mrs. Dickey was the oldest person in town. Her son died at Rockland on the same day and hour. James Hinckly, ten years old, skated into a hole in the ice at Baring, Me., Dec 12 and was drowned. Asa Russel, of Brighton, died Nov.[paper says 80 bit I think it should be 30 ken], at the ripe age of 89 years. He settled in that town over 64 years ago.
