Dill 581 Crown St #27 Meriden, CT. 06450 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Feb11.txt" LOCAL AND MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS Mr C.A. Merrill, Agent for the Columbia Falls and Machias Blueberry Packing Co'c. has contracted with Mr H.L. Grover for the manufacture of one hundred and thirty thousand cans, work to be commenced at once. In July it is probable that 130,000 to 150,000 more can will be made. Twenty-eight tons of tin and solder were received and stored last week. Mr. Coffin Smith sold Henry W. Clark a pair of five year old oxen last week. The cattle were slaughtered and made excellent beef. Mr Frank Smith, of Northfield at work on the Island for Mr Gilbert Longfellow was kicked recently by one of the team horses, which disabled him from work for a short time. Joseph N. Prescott, father of Harriet Prescott Spofford, and at one time a prominent democratic politician of Newburyport died Jan 22, aged 74 years. Mr Prescott at one time we think was a resident of Calais. Mr Theodore Beane, formerly a prominent citizen of Hancock county, Maine, died in Providence, R.I. Wednesday. He was 88 years old. In 1836 President Jackson appointed Mr. Beane Deputy Collector of the port of Frenchman's Bay, and he held the position nearly five years. He also served as County Commissioner of Hancock county, and was also a member of the Masonic fraternity. Mr Beane lived at Sullivan in 1856; his son, E.J. Beane, keeping a public house at that time. News was received at Ellsworth Jan 18 of the loss at sea of J.W. Chilcott, son of J.C. Chilcott of the city. He was washed overboard from the brig Dirigo, Coffin, of which he was second mate, during the gale of Dec 11, while off the Bermudas. Young Chilcott was a grand-son of Mr John O. Tupper, at Jonesboro. John Murry, a resident of Boothbay, has a somewhat remarkable history. He is seventy-nine years old, never sick a day in his life, never drank a drop of liquor nor used any tobacco. He is in the enjoyment of excellent health, having the appearance of a man not over sixty years of age, and a stranger seeing him walking on the road would not take him to be over fourty. He carries on his farm with little help, having got about all his hay last summer. He makes no use of spectacles. He ia a pensioner of the war of 1812. Now is the time for husbands to get the paper early and cut out the advertisements of places where sealskins sacks are sold. A cut in time often saves $175. Robert Buckley died Dec. 26 last, at North Head, Grand Manan, aged 106 years. He was born in County Tippery, Ireland, Aug 1774. He came to this country and settled on Campobello about the beginning of the present century. For the last twenty years he resided with an adopted daughter, Mrs Gaskill, at North Head. Frank Farnham recently drove against a tree, broke his pung and disfigured his face. MARRIED In Calais, Jan 19, Allen M. Manning of Rockland and Miss E A Greenlaw of C.
