Local and Miscellaneous Items Col. L. Baker Sawyer, of Steuben, was reported at Bar Harbor last week in his yacht Wave. A barn of Miles A Barns at Fort Fairfield was struck by lightning July 16 and burned. Loss $500. No insurance. The wind unroofed Albert Kennison's barn. Capt Bibber, of the yacht Tempest, was badly burned by the premature discharge of a small cannon at Somesville, Mt Dessert, Friday. Cigarettes are made from old stumps of cigars picked out of the gutters in the streets of New York by children who sell them to the manufacturers. The girls "love 'em" nevertheless. Isaiah, son of Stephen Bacon of Baileyville, was drowned on the Connecticut river, log driving, July 19, aged 23 years: unmarried. He had $285 in gold on his person of his own and several watches that belonged to his fellow workmen Lester Small, of Cherryfield, was one of five boys who escaped from the Reform School at Cape Elizabeth July 8, by throwing pepper in the eyes of the night watchman and maltreating him. Four of the five were recaptured next day; Lester being one, and now it looks as if the boys would be put in a stronger State Institution. Wm H. Young, Esq., of the St. Croix Exchange, Calais, left last week to visit Nebraska, where he has a cattle ranch. His son Albert is in Nebraska. OBITUARY Jason C. Leighton, Esq., of Columbia, died suddenly, morning of July 21 at the age of 62. He had been in his usual health, attending to trade and business with his usual care and activity. He was second son of late Moses Leighton. Levi L., Jason C, Asa and Otis M., Levi only now living. Mr Leighton leaves a widow daughter of Leonard Worster; three children, two sons and a daughter. Until about ten years since the Brothers, Levi and J.C. were in trade at Epping Corner; they dissolved, J.C. continuing in business at the Corner, where he had been for 22 years, and Levi with his son Horace M, started in trade at Columbia Falls, Firm L.Leighton & Son. Jason was a good citizen, square in his dealings, highly respected and will be greatly missed by the community; most mourned by those who are of his household, so suddenly bereaved. The last letter received from him was dated and received the day before his death in which he said "I am pleased to foward you the name of a good paying subscriber," showing his kindness toward and interest for others, a trait in his character during life appreciated by hundreds of persons but never so clearly recognized and acknowledged as since the heart that prompted and the hand that excuted are still in death.
