Dill 581 Crown St #27 Meriden, CT. 06450 FROM JONESPORT There are stores kept by D.J. Sawyer, C.H. Mansfield, Wm. F. Mansfield, at Sawyer's Coce. At Cross Cove Mrs. C.A. Chandler has a variety store and at the Steamboat Landing Mr. N. Rumery has a store and full stock of goods. Mrs. A.E. Davis keeps a large stock of millinery goods. She expects to return from Boston soon with a full line latest style goods. Mrs. M.E. Barker has a store; also J.G. Wescott who keeps groceries, dry goods and family supplies. Joshua S. Walker has lately been West and intends to open a store with a new stock. Reuben L., son of Capt. Daniel S. Hall, has charge of the Life Saving Station on Crumpled Island. His crew numbers seven men. Geo. Eldridge Watts is building a house on the lot lately occupied by Chas. F. Barker. Capt. Thomas W. Beale, who has been a ship-master and a dealer in pilings, spars, etc. for several years, is one of the square dealing men respected for his integrity and punctual discharge of obligations. Miss Lizzie Woodward is building a store expecting to open a trade in dry and fancy goods. Mr.W.P.J. Cummings keeps a grocery store on the same site where the late Capt. Darius Dickey traded for many years. He keeps a good assortment of family groceries and sells at low prices. FROM EAST MACHIAS James W. Dennison, ship blacksmith, left the first of May for Washington Territory, where he expects to remain for sometime. Mrs. Harriet S., widow of the late Stephen Hall, daughter of late Andrew Simpson of Jonesboro, with her daughter Clara, left for California a few days since, probably to make that State her future home. PERSONAL Mr. Charles E., son of Chas. W. Vose, Esq., is very low in health; failing daily. Mrs. P.C. Hill returned to Canton, NY, from California early in April. Her health was poor on first arrival home but she is better now. Mrs. H.L. Watts of Jonesport, has nearly recovered from her recent severe sickness. Newell, son of late Peter Hall, died at his home in Whiting, May 19, aged 31. He spent the winter in Texas, returned less than three weeks ago and while at work about his mill he got wet and cold, typhoid fever set in and he died in a few days. He leaves a widow and two young children. He was highly esteemed as an industrious, honorable business man and will be missed not only by the three remaining brothers with whom he was associated in business, but by the community generally. LOCAL AND MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS Mrs. Garfield has low typhoid fever, and improvement cannot soon be expected. Mr. Edward Allen has removed his family from Whiting to Machias. Hon. Moses Emery, of Saco, died suddenly May 11 aged 87; the oldest lawyer in Maine. Elias Hinckley at Jonesport, was born May 12, 1800. On May 1, 1881 he was holding and guiding the plow drawn by a pair of sprightly young oxen. Chas. E. Merrill, of China, Me., who so inhumanly murdered his mother last winter, was tried in the Court, at Augusta, found guilty and sentenced to "Hard labor in the State Prison for life." Mrs. Hannah Farnsworth widow of the late Isaac Farnsworth nee Woodward is in her 96th year; eye sight and hearing good. She lately walked a distance of six miles in one day. She lives on Beale's Island, Jonesport. Another old landlord gone; Simon O'Brien, fourty years or longer, hotel keeper at Robbinston, died at his home of paralysis, May 14, aged 75. Scarcely a man on the road Calais to Eastport would be more missed than Simon O'Brien; a jolly, good natured Irishman, a native of Ireland abounding in a hearty welcome to callers, brim full of wit and a fair share of wisdom. Jehu J. Crawford, the old barber so well known at Eastport 25 years ago, died at Chelsea Mass., April 9, aged 55 years. Jehu has gone where the good shavers go. We have genealogy of several of the earliest families who settled in Addison, Milbridge and other towns in Washington County, that we shall make some report of in detail as time permits. Friday night May 13, W.J. Cummings of Stark, NH, was run over by a grand Trunk freight train and killed. He was about 35 years of age. Mr. C. formerly lived in Machias. His wife, who was a daughter of late Joseph Lambert, died before he removed from Machias. He was a one armed soldier; wore the empty sleeve. Invitations are out, and the nuptial ceremonies are to be performed in the Episcopal church at Thomaston, Tuesday May 24; Albert B. Fales, of Rockland and Miss Alice J.O., daughter of David O'Brien, of Thomaston. The bride is niece of Hon. Edward O'Brien. R. Freeman Wass, familiarly known as "Uncle Freeman," a native of Addison, died at Grundy Center, Iowa, March 30, 1881, aged 69. When young he followed the sea and removed to Chicago in 1844, and from C. to Grundy Center in 1851. He was highly respected and reconized by all his associates as a man of sincere and practical piety. "Machias in 1811," by an eye witness will appear in next UNION." Jonathan Dorr at Columbia is now 94 yrs. old. He reads newspapers without glasses, hearing and health generally is very good. He has had the 5th generation born unto him; his children and decendents numbering 149 persons! MARRIED In Cherryfield, May 14, by Rev. E.M. Cousens, B.F. Harrington and Miss Laura F. Porter, formerly of Pembroke, Me., and Miss Josie Yale, of M. In Prospect Harbor, May 7, by E.W. Cleaves, Esq., Joseph W. Sawyer and Miss Rebecca A. Huckins, both of Milbridge. DIED In Calais, May 16, Willard Stanhope, 78 years. In Minneapolis, Minn., March 25, Mrs. M.A.S., wife of Simeon B. Lowell, Esq., aged 72 years; in Spencer Brook, Minn, May 10, Simeon B. Lowell, aged 75 years, both formerly of Whitneyville. In Jonesport, May 13, John Lowell, of Phipsburge, Me, aged 75 years. In Ellsworth, May 8, Mrs. Laura H. Newman, aged 46 years.
