The Senate Oct 24 confirmed the nomination of Edward B. Curtis to be
postmaster at Machias. Mr. Curtis has filled the office very acceptably
for several years.

Tuesday morning, Captain Charles E. Shaw, of sch. Uncle Sam, from
Rockland, lime laden, accidently shot his brother, Edward Shaw, in the
back, with a charge of shot in the musket which he was oiling. The sch.
was laying in Hog Island roads, near Portland, and they had been gunning
previously. Edward was standing in front of his boat and Charles was in
the rear of the cabin. Edward said "Oh, Charley," and fell. Charles
sprang foward and caught him, but he only lived two or three minutes.
Charles is twenty and Edward twenty-nine years old. Neither were
married. An officer went down and brought up Charles, leaving the other
officers in charge of the vessel. The schooner had no other crew than
the two men, but others from the neighboring vessels arrived in a few
minutes.

drink."
