Nov 1, 1881 Machias Union (Washington Co., Maine Date: 97-12-07 06:53:57 EST From: ctyankee@bigfoot.com (Ken) There are in town of Cornish five people above the age of ninety years, Mr. William Woodbury is ninety-two; Miss Pamalia Cole is ninety and over; Mrs. Daniel Cole is over ninety, and goes to milking every morning; Mrs. Enoch Jewell is ninety three and smart; Mrs. Tabitha Pugsley is ninety-four and goes out every other day to see her children in the neighborhood. Three weeks ago she knit a pair of stockings that took the premium at the York County Fiar. [Biddeford Times. Mrs. Deshon of Portland, will be 103 years of age in December. Her first husband was Thomas Akers, an uncle of Paul Akers, the sculptor. Her daughter, now living with her, is Mrs. Eleaner Myer, whose husband was of the firm of Myer & Noble, iron dealers. Mrs. Deshon is now confined to her bed, but her mind is still very active. She remembers many incidents in her childhood, among others the death and funeral of her mother, aged nintey-four years. She has been a hard worker, and until a year ago was never sick, and always did her own work. Local and Miscellaneous Items The Senate Oct 24 confirmed the nomination of Edward B. Curtis to be postmaster at Machias. Mr. Curtis has filled the office very acceptably for several years. Tuesday morning, Captain Charles E. Shaw, of sch. Uncle Sam, from Rockland, lime laden, accidently shot his brother, Edward Shaw, in the back, with a charge of shot in the musket which he was oiling. The sch. was laying in Hog Island roads, near Portland, and they had been gunning previously. Edward was standing in front of his boat and Charles was in the rear of the cabin. Edward said "Oh, Charley," and fell. Charles sprang foward and caught him, but he only lived two or three minutes. Charles is twenty and Edward twenty-nine years old. Neither were married. An officer went down and brought up Charles, leaving the other officers in charge of the vessel. The schooner had no other crew than the two men, but others from the neighboring vessels arrived in a few minutes. Mrs Marther Scales, aged 102, died at Carrollton, Illinois, Oct 13. A Rockland man saw advertised :a sure cure for drunkenness." He fowarded the necessary dollar and received by return mail written on a valuable postal card in beautiful violet ink, the magic words- "Don't drink."
