Oct 11, 1881 Machias Union Date: 97-11-11 04:15:18 EST From: ctyankee@bigfoot.com (Ken) From Ellsworth Andrew M. Fox lately arrested for forgery and now lying in Ellsworth jail, it is reported, has become a maniac. N.K. Sawyer, Esq., and wife are in town boarding at the house they formerly occupied on Pine street. Hon. E. Hale is now at home recently returned from Cleveland. Later Three weeks ago Andrew M. Fox was apparently one of Ellsworths' prosperous merchants, Today, Oct 6, he died in jail. Mrs. Hyman's Parrots A novel prosecution was initiated yesterday in the arrest of Mrs Rachel Hyman, widow, who keeps two stores on South street, below Tenth. In one she sells boots and shoes and in the other a number of parrots and other birds are kept for sale. The invitation given by one of the first named species of the feathered race in uttering the words, "Say, come over here and buy some shoes," has occasioned the trouble in which Mrs Hyman finds herself involved. On the opposite side of the street are two rival shoe establishments, the proprietors of which are firmly convinced that the parrot is taking away their trade by his oft repeated entreaties to their patrons. Magistrate Collins evidently agreed with them and held Mrs Hyman in $500 bail for maintaining a nuisance. [Philadelphia Press] Local and Miscellaneous Items Capt. Seth Emerson, at Milltown, Calais, died Oct 3, aged 85 years, 6 months; one of the oldest citizens and highly respected. Emerson, mate, of Gouldsboro, Me., aged 30, died of yellow fever and was buried at sea. A dispatch from New York, Oct 7 says that Capt. Wm. E. Sawyer was lost overboard and drowned on that day. He was son of Capt. Eben Sawyer of Machiasport. His wife had left a few days before to meet him in New York. One Charles Hickey stole a boat owned by Samuel Rollins at East Machias, went to Grand Manan and traded the boat off exchanging it for another. Mr. Rollins at quite a cost succeeded in getting his boat again. Hickey was arrested and lodged in Machias jail. Dr Daniel Harwood died at his home in Dorchester District, Boston, Oct 2d, at the age of 80 years and 6 months. Thirty-five to 40 years ago he spent some time in Machias, as one of the Proprietors in the M.W.P. and Mill Co. He built the dam where S.W. Pope & Co's mills are. For years it has been known by the name of Harwood's dam. He was interested in timber lands and real estate on the river and in the village. We were asked the question a day recently: "Can you tell me how many places of business or trade (where articles are kept for sale) there is in town?" We answered "we think we can: about twenty-five." "You are wide of the number" was the reply. Upon investigation we found that there were thirty-eight places of legitimate trade. Besides those included above there is one photographer; two carriage manufactory's; five blacksmith shops; three shoe makers' shops; two dentists; three doctors in medicine; three lawyers; one barber; a sash and blind factory, and a planing mill; one machine shop and one foundery; two cabinet repair shops; a number of painters' and carpenters' shops; three hotels and several bording houses; five churches; numerous dress makers; and a sail loft.
