Dill 581 Crown St #27 Meriden, CT. 06450 From Sept. 3, 1997 Bertha M. Armstrong Machias Bertha M. Armstrong, 81,died Aug.30, 1997, at a Machias health-care facility. She was born in Northfield, May 18, 1910, the daughter of Wil- liam and Isabell (Stanhope) Roberts. She was a member of the Centre Street Congregational Church and Guild and was a past member of the Machias Extension Group. She was an excellent cook, known for her pies which were served at Tom's Lunch on Main Street and at Joyce's in Hoyt Town. She cooked at Hansons Hospital, the University of Maine at Machias, and lastly at the Marshall Health Care Facility, until she retired. She is survived by one son, Donald A. Hill and his wife, Angelena of Palmyra; grandchildren, Donnette Hill of Nairobi, Kenya, Amanda Perry of Oakland, Danielle Hill of Palmyra, and Allen Hill of Shreveport La.; stepdaughters, Annie Hanscom of Machias, and Clara Dow of Springdale; several stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Roberts of Marshfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Nathan Armstrong of Machias, and her husband of 41 years, William Allen Hill of Machias; one stepdaughter. Mary Stevens of Hancock. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wedneday, Sept. 3, at Gardner-Hall Funeral Home, Machias, with the Rev. Gerald Fritz officiating. Interment will be in Longfellow Cemetery, Machias. Stanley Dalot Looke Addison Stanley Dalot Looke, 89, of South Addison, died Sept. 1, 1997, at a Bangor hospital after a short illness. He was born Sept. 16, 1907, in Addison, the son of Moses Llewelyn and Violet (Dalot) Looke. He was a retired bus driver for the Addison schools for 35 years and was also self-employed. He enjoyed farming and family. He was a loving and caring person to all that knew him. He will be sadly missed by his surviving family: his wife of 53 years, Mary (Nash); his son, Ronald and wife, Connie of Addison; his daughter, Sharon Smith and husband, Maurice of Holden; three sisters, Phillis Ingersoll of Marlborough, Conn., Elizabeth Emerson of Jonesport, and Barbara Farren of Assison; one brother, Louis of Ellsworth. He was also the loving grandfather of Lawrence "Larry" Looke, Melissa (Looke) Carver, Sherry (Smith) Desmarais and Stacey Smith; and four great-granddaughters, Stanley was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm; and a sister, Marguerite. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Union Church in South Addison with the Rev. R. Michael Beal officiating. Interment will be in Churchill Cemetery, Addison. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Union Church, South Addison; or to the Maine Seacoast Missionary Society. Arrangements by Gardner-Hall Funeral Home, Jonesport. Robert L. Watts, Sr. East Machias Robert L. Watts, Sr., 81, died Aug. 27, 1997 at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born at Jonesboro, Sept. 24, 1915, the son of Lester and Lory (Schleup) Watts. He was a graduate of Jonesboro High School and attended Beals Business College. He served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II. He owned and operated Watt's Photo Shop in Machias for many years, served two terms in the Maine House of Representatives, and was employed by the Maine Department of Civil Defense in Augusta. His interests included woodworking, photography, gourmet cooking, boating, genealogy and his grandchildren. He was a member of Centre Street Congregational Church, Harwood Lodge No. 91, AF & AM, Machias Rotary Club, and was a founding member of the Machias Valley Boat Club. Surviving are his wife, Inez; one son, Robert L. Watts, Jr. and wife Alicia of Vinalhaven; one daughter, Barbara Watts Huebert and husband, James of Montoursville, Pa.; one stepson, James Miller and wife, Cindy of Ipswich, Mass.; one stepdaughter, Nancy Davis and husband, Peter of Underhill, Vt.; eight grandchildren and relatives residing in Switzerland. He was predeceased by his first wife, Pauline E. Cummings. A celebration of his life was held Sunday, Aug. 31, at Centre Street Congregational Church, Machias, with the Rev. Dr. Gerald Fritz and the Rev. Norman Duzen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Porter Memorial Library, Court Street, Machias 04654. Arrangements by Gardner-Hall Funeral Home. Harry O. Foss, Sr. Machiasport Harry O. Foss, Sr., 67, died Aug. 28, 1997, at a local hospital. He was born at Machias, March 14, 1930, the son of Alex and Viola (Ackley) Foss, Sr. He enjoyed spending his time out of doors. He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Tinker. He is survived by one son, Harry Foss, Jr. of Machiasport; three brothers, Alden and Alex, Jr., both of Machiasport, and Roger of East Machias; four sisters, Edith and Myrtle, both of jonesboro, Marie and Mary Ellen, both of Virginia; one grandchild, Rebecca Marie Foss.
