He was born October 4, 1832, in Sparta, Livingston Co., New York, and moved to Cass County, Michigan in 1846, with his parents and siblings Simon, Alonzo, Lorenzo D. F., and Jane. His brother Charles N Poor was already established in the Cass County/Van Buren County area. Based on records from Pension Files, we know that Chauncey enlisted in Captain Richard Bustred Battery C Chicago Light Artillery and was mustered at Chicago on the 14th of September, 1861 and was honorably discharged at Baltimore, MD on the 21 of January 1863. In his sworn statement “Declaration for original Pension of an Invalid” “Soon after the Battle was attacked by a painful disease in the right hip and thigh which soon extended throughout the right leg and finally extended to the left hip and leg. Was treated in the Battery Hospital and 2nd corps hospital at Harpers Ferry and Stuarts Mansion Hospital at Baltimore, MD.” Prior to his enlistment, he was a carriage maker at Carriage Ironer in Plainwell, Michigan. The disease Chauncey developed was phlebitis and resulted in varicose veins in both legs. The legs became very painful and he could not stand for any length of time as they would develop ulcers and swelling of the legs. Chauncey became a Justice of the Peace and ended up specializing in Pension cases. Around 1864, Chauncey married Adaline A Field, although he called her Augusta A Field in his statement regarding his first marriage. They had a daughter Lena Lavern Poore June 4, 1865 in Decatur, MI, Adaline died February 5, 1866 in White Hall, IL. Her body was brought back to Decatur. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church and she was buried in the Hamilton cemetery. This information was found in the pension papers. Chauncey married Mary Ann Powers on January 14, 1869, in Kalamazoo, MI. They had two children Edna Beatrix November 15, 1871 and Raymond J. December 23, 1874, both were born in Plainwell, MI. Based on the pension records, Chauncey suffered a great deal from his legs. The legs needed to be wrapped and he suffered from infection at times. Many times he needed aid from someone else for his care. I believe that Chauncey was a well educated man and from his letters of application for pension and a determined man as he fought to keep his pension. Mary continued to fight for the widows pension after Chauncey died.
