The Presentation was made by Capt. Harry F. Taylor, assistant deputy Commander of area H. stationed at Fort Custer. Shattuck, until recently a prisoner of war, was awarded the medal through action occurring near Cassino, Italy, January 31, 1945. While under attack, he left his position behind a stone wall, walked coolly toward a German machine gun nest and persuaded two Germans, manning the gun, to surrender. He was constantly under fire from other machine guns. His heroic action aided in the final conquest of the hill. Shattuck at present is a patient at the Gardiner General hospital in Chicago Additional Comments: Arthur Shattuck was born in Portage, Kalamazoo County Michigan, He was the son of Leo and Jennie (Gregory) Shattuck. He was my Mother's brother, he is buried at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan County Michigan.
