Miles (1823 – 1899) Source: Saturday Globe [later known as Wayland Globe], Wayland, Allegan Co., MI, February 11, 1899, page 4, col. 2 “TOLD OF THE TOWN Benjamin Miles, living three miles Southeast of this village die very suddenly of apoplexy on February 2 aged 75 years, 6 months, 18 days. The funeral was held from F. M. Church at Gregoryville on Sunday last, conducted by Rev. M. B. Rawson and was largely attended. Those of his relatives from abroad who were present at the funeral were Austin Miles of Lowell [Kent County], brother; Frank Miles of Leslie [Ingham County], son; Mrs. O. Lombard of Leslie, daughter; Lee Miles, nephew; Mrs. T. Muir, niece, of Vermontville [Eaton County]. Also Mrs. Arthur VanPatten of this township, a daughter. Deceased was born in Genesee County, New York, and on March 25, 1846, he was united in marriage to Caroline E. Foster at Bristol, Ohio, and immediately moved to Michigan and located in Montcalm County where he resided until about 10 years ago when he came to Wayland and since lived here. Deceased was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, upright and just in his dealings toward all. He appreciated his home as few men do, never willingly being absent therefrom. Like his life, his death was peaceful, a passing away to eternal rest. He will be missed by all who knew him.” [Note: From other sources, Benjamin moved to Macomb County – not Montcalm County – Michigan about 1850, then to Hillsdale and Jackson Counties in the mid-1850s for twenty years, then to Eaton County by 1880, and finally to Allegan County about 1889.] Transcribed by Martin Christie about 1982.
