MI, January 24, 1903, Page 1, Col. 2 “STORIES OF THE TOWN Mrs. Caroline E. Miles, mother of Mrs. Arthur VanPatten, living near Gregoryville in this township, was found dead in her bed Tuesday morning. She retired the night before as well as usual and had not complained of any unusual ills the day previous. Dr. H. J. Turner was called and pronounced her death caused from cerebral apoplexy. Deceased was born in Boston, Mass., March 25, 1825. She was married in Ohio in 1840 where she lived until coming to Michigan in 1850, her husband, Benjamin Miles having died February 2, 1899. She leaves two children, Mr. Frank Miles of Maston [sic – actually Mason, Ingham Co.], Michigan, and Mrs. Arthur VanPatten of this place. The funeral was held from the residence Thursday at 2 PM conducted by Eld. M. B. Rawson. Foster was born in Boston, Mass., March 24, 1825 and moved to Ohio in 1828. She was married on her 22nd birthday at Bristol, Ohio, to Benjamin Miles, residing there four years when they removed to Macomb County, Michigan, later to Liberty, Jackson County and to Wayland in 1889 where she has since resided. Six children were born to this union; Mrs. Martha Carr of Bellaire [Antrim County], Mrs. Mary E. Youngs and Frank Miles of Mason [Ingham County], Mrs. Elizabeth Lumbard of Leslie [Ingham County] and Mrs. Cora VanPatten who cared for her aged parents. She passed to the life beyond Monday, January 1903 [NB: Allegan Co. death records give date of death as Jan 19, 1903] at the age of 77 years, 9 months, 14 days, leaving 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She has been an invalid for the past 20 years and ever bore her suffering with that Christ-like patience of a true Christian. He kindly smile and pleasant greeting endeared her to the loved ones who are left to mourn her loss. She was converted to the religion of Jesus Christ about 1890 and together with her husband who predeceased her by 4 years, endeavored to live a consistent Christian life.” “CARD OF THANKS It is with a grateful heart that we thank our friends for their many acts of kindness to us in our recent affliction, especially the choir.
