Ernest John Schuyler's Obituary, Wayland, Allegan County, Michigan SUBJECT: Ernest John Schuyler Obituaries SUBMITTER: Nancy Morefield EMAIL: toiyabe@qnet.com DATE: Jun 20, 1999 SURNAMES: SCHUYLER ERNEST SCHUYLER CHOKED TO DEATH ___________________________ Tumor Burst In His Throat And Stopped The Air Passage ___________________________ Three Men Held Him In Bed ___________________________ His Struggles Were Like Those of a Drowning Man ___________________________ Son on Dr. Peter Schuyler and a Printer by Trade - Taken to Wayland, Mich. ___________________________ The death of Ernest Schuyler was a horrible one. He choked to death at his home in Main street Friday morning. A tumor burst in his throat and he slowly choked to death while the people at his bedside stood helplessly by. They could not aid him. The dying man gasped for air and struggled so violently that three strong men were required to hold him in his bed. The poisonous fluid from the broken tumor stopped the air passages. His struggles were like those of a drowning man. Ernest Schuyler was the son of Dr. Peter Schuyler of Seventh and Main streets. He had been in bad health for some time, brought on by the growth in his throat. Mr. Schuyler had been unable to work for some time, but helped his father in his practice. For the last week he has been confined to his bed and death was looked for at almost any time. Friday morning the young man began to grow worse. His father and a few friends had been watching at his bedside during the night. At 6:30 o'clock the tumor burst and after suffering horribly he died in the struggle. Mr. Schuyler was 27 years old and single. He was a printer by trade and a native of Wayland, Mich. He was not a member of the local typographical union, but had not worked at the trade in this city. The young man was the only son of Dr. Schuyler. The remains were taken Friday to Wayland, where they will be interred. [NOTE: Ernest had a brother, Earl Lester Schuyler, living in Wayland, MI. Not mentioned are two sisters that preceded Ernest in death on December 11, 1874 of Typhoid Fever, in Lansing, MI. Samantha Schuyler, his mother, was also living in Evansville at the time of his death. Ernest was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wayland, Allegan Co, MI] The Courier: Evansville, IN Front Page - Column 3 Saturday March 11, 1899 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ERNEST SCHUYLER ___________________________ Death Yesterday of the Son of Dr. P.L. Schuyler ___________________________ Remains Taken to Waveland [Wayland} ___________________________ Young Man Came Here to Receive Treatment ___________________________ Ernest Schuyler, son of Dr. P.L. Schuyler died suddenly, about 7 o'clock yesterday morning, at his room over Weber's drug store, Seventh and Main streets. Mr. Schuyler was twenty-seven years old and his home was in Waveland [Wayland], Mich. He arrived here several weeks ago to receive treatment for stomach trouble. A short time after his arrival an ulcer formed in his throat. His condition was not considered critical, and he was sitting up in his room Thursday. Death was caused by the breaking of the ulcer, which filled the windpipe with blood, thus interfering with respiration. The remains were taken to Waveland [Wayland] via the E. & T. H. last night.
