The Otsego Union; Otsego, Allegan Co., MI; Vol 30, No 10; Thursday 22 Sep 1904; Page 1, Col 2 
Mrs. M. D. Shears
Died: Saturday (17 Sep 1904) afternoon; 3:00 o’clock at her home in this 
township (Otsego) after a long illness.  
Illness: “Six years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis, and about fifteen 
months ago she fell and broke her hip, since which time she has been 
helpless.  Two weeks ago she suffered another stroke of paralysis, and 
gradually failed from that time.”  
Born: June 15th, 1847, in Ashtabula county, Ohio.
Married: M. D. Shears; 1862, at that place 
Residence: “They came to Otsego in 1865 and have since lived here with the 
exception of nine years spent in Grand Rapids.” 
“Seven children were born to them, all of whom survive; Oscar of Kalamazoo, 
Sherman, Bert, Arthur and Jay of this place, Barney of Pennsylvania, and Mrs. 
Lydia Ludtke of Roberts, Wis.”  
Funeral: two o’clock Tuesday (20 Sep 1904) afternoon  from the house 
Officiated by Rev. H. D. Skinner
Bears:  The six sons
 “Those who attended the funeral from away were Barney Shears of Pennsylvania, 
Oscar Shears and wife of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Lydia Ludtke of Wisconsin, John 
Hammon of Elkhart, Ind., Mrs. James Hammon and Mrs. Chas Hammon of 
Bloomingdale.”

Additional Comments:
Marinda Elizabeth SHEARS was my 2nd Great-Grandmother.  Her maiden name was 
Marinda Elizabeth HAMMOND (also spelled HAMMON).  Her parents were James 
HAMMOND and Marinda LEAVITT.  Mindard D. Shears and Marinda Elizabeth Hammond 
were married 7 Oct 1862 in Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., OH.
