JOSEPH, MI Thursday, Jan 14, 1909 DEATH WINS RACE AGAINST HAND SLED Alpena, Mich., Jan. 14. - After clinging desperately to the edge of the ice through which he had broken, for more than an hour, John Witt, 53 years old, was discovered by Gus Kalisch, who pulled Witt out of the icy water just as the latter was losing his hold through sheer exhaustion and cold. Witt had been after wood and broke through a thin spot in the ice. He was unable to walk when pulled out and Kalisch placed him upon a hand sled and ran three miles when he fell exhausted. Others came to the rescue but Witt failed to survive the ordeal and died as he was being carried into his home. Two sisters survive him.
