A most unfortunate accident occurred last night by which George Cocking, the 15- year old stepson of Edward Johnston lost his life. George in company with Guy Selden, about ten years old, went down to the lake at about half past five to go in swimming. George stripped off his clothing and getting on to a long plank shoved the plank out some fifty or sixty feet from the shore. Guy, however, did not go into the water, as he tells the story, but stood on the bank watching George. He also says he cautioned George not to go out so far, who replied that he could swim. Guy then started to go back toward the house. He had gone a few rods along the bank and turning to look back saw George in the water apparently struggling to hold on to the plank, and soon after he saw him sink out of sight. He waited a few moments expecting him to come to the surface again, but as he did not he started for home to give the alarm. Mrs. Wm. Cosgrove, who lives in Mr. Foote's house, overheard Guy tell her children, who were playing in the yard, what had happened, and started for the place to rescue George if possible, but on arriving there, though she could see the body in the water, it was too far for her to reach it by any means at hand. Presently Nelson Pennock came along but he thought the boy beyond human aid and made no immediate effort to get him out but went after more help and a boat. The body was taken out in about half an hour, but life was extinct. The water where the boy was drowned was not over six feet deep, and as he was a good swimmer the accident can only be explained on the theory that he was taken suddenly with cramps. George was a bright, manly boy and his untimely death will prove a hard blow to the bereaved mother who has the sympathy of the entire community in her affliction. The funeral services will probably be held at the M.E. church tomorrow.
