Shields passed peacefully into the silent realm of death, at the house of his brother, Alexander G. Shields, Friday morning, June 12, 1891. Mr. Shields was born in Glasgow - February 5, 1849. He moved to Canada in 1853, and to Lake Superior in 1858 in company with his brother James. He remained at Portage Lake until the summer of 1867, when he went to California. He remained in the west about 18 years and then returned to Lake Superior, making his home with his brother in L'Anse most of the time since. In the month of February, 1890, he was taken with what was at first supposed simply a sore throat. An examination was made by physicians the following May when his malady was pronounced to be a cancer of the tongue. After treatment for several months by the local physicians of this and Houghton counties it was decided to submit his case to a celebrated specialist at Milwaukee. An operation was performed and the cancer removed, as was supposed, and Mr. Shields felt much relieved for several months after. But the malady returned with renewed vigor and it was soon apparent that there was no hope for his recovery. The funeral services will be held at the M.E. church, L'Anse, tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, at two o'clock. The local lodge of the A.O.U.W., of which order the deceased was a member and the Select Knights in uniform will attend in a [sic] body and take charge of the remains. The deceased was noted for his unassuming, kind and hearty manner - one who would not fail to win and retain the affection of his relations and the esteem of friends. All those who know him, and they are many, will extend the hand of sympathy to his sorrowing relatives in their bereavement.
