BARNUM [The Hastings Banner, Thurs., April 12, 1894, pg 5, col 3] PERSONAL MENTION--Henry Barnum, an old resident of Carlton died Tuesday of heart failure. Though Mr. Barnum had been ill for some time, yet the news of his death came as a surprise to his many friends in the city. [The Hastings Banner, Thurs., April 19, 1894, pg 4, col 3] Mr. Henry B. Barnum, son of Zebulon and Betsey Barnum, was born in Carlton, Orleans Co., NY, Nov. 25th, 1825 and died in Carlton, Barry Co., MI, April 9th, 1894, of heart failure, superinduced by a complication of diseases. Deceased was the youngest child of a family of 12 children and none survive him. He came to Michigan with his parents when but 11 years of age, stopping for a year in Jackson county. The following year he came with his family to the farm he owned when he died, and where he spent his boyhood and manhood days and by his efforts made it to "Bud and Blossom as a Rose." At the early age of 20 he was married to Sarah A. Crippin. To them were born 4 children, two of whom died in infancy, the remaining two, Austin C. married and living two miles south of the farm, and Viola, wife of Prof. L.E. Irland, of Plainwell, Allegan Co. His wife died Jan. 11th, 1858 leaving him with the small children and an aged mother to care for, the father having died several years previously. March 1st, 1859 he was married to Losina [sic] Rogers. To them were born two children, Walter S., married and living on the old homestead, and Jessie, wife of Perry Stowell, living in West Carlton. Mr. Barnum was a kind, affectionate husbad and an indulgent father and an obliging neighbor, honored and respected by a large circle of friends and went down to the grave lamented.
