Barnum "Went West" 39 Years Ago and Became Prominent Californian Word has been received of the death in Fresno, California, of Horace E. Barnum, aged 59 years, a former resident of this vicinity, who went west in 1875 and became a prominent citizen of Fresno. He was engaged in farming and in the hotel business and in horticulture. He was county auditor 20 years. He was a very popular county officer and the flag on the courthouse in Fresno was half-masted and the door of the courthouse was draped in mourning when his death was announced. He was a member of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, of the Elks Lodge, the Knights of Pythias, United Workmen Foresters and Woodmen. He is survived by his widow and two children. His death was due to an operation for cancer of the stomach. A very large body of citizens and public officials attended the funeral. dz
