Myers, an old resident of North Woodland Township, died this morning...He left a widow and two children. He has been ill for some time. Funeral will be held at the Tamarack church on Sunday at 11 o'clock. "The Lake Odessa Wave," Friday, Nov. 25, 1904 OBITUARY Horace G. Myers, one of the best known residents of Woodland Township, died at his home near the Tamarack church about 1 o'clock Friday morning, November 18, 1904, after having suffered for three years but was not confined to his bed till the last five months of his illness. Mr. Myers may be classed as one of the pioneers of Woodland, living here nearly all his life, having come here with his parents when only three years of age. He was born in Kalamazoo county, Michigan, August 23, 1846, was married December 1, 1871 to Jane Covey. To this union were born three children--one died in infancy, the other two, Hayden E. and Elsie A., now having grown to maturity and married; Hayden, now living in Missaukee County, Elsie being Mrs. Wallace Merrian, now living at her father's farm. These two, with the bereaved wife, two brothers and three sisters are left to mourn the loss of a loving father, kind husband and affectionate brother. Mr. Myers was converted in 1873, and immediately joined the United Brethren church, and remained a faithful member till his death. He was a firm and sincere believer in the christian religion, was always an active and faithful worker both in the church and Sunday school. So firm was his belief in the Christian religion, that when near the end he had the sacrament administered. The doors of his home were always open to hospitality, so that the friendless and those who were in need might feel rest and shelter. In him was always found a friend in time of need, distress and sickness. The funeral was held Sunday forenoon from the Tamarack church, the Rev. Charles Jarvis officiating, the remains being interred in the Lakeside cemetery, being followed by a host of relatives and friends. He was one of a family of ten children, two brothers and one sister preceding him. [The Lake Odessa Wave, Lake Odessa, MI, Thurs., May 31, 1945] ----------------------------------------------------- On a visit on 9 March 1989 to Hugh J. Dodds of Saranac, MI--Hugh said his Uncle Frank Myers worked at the water department in Lake Odessa. He was a hard working man, rarely went anywhere, as he had to be there to keep the water running. Frank & Ella had the first bathtub that Hugh ever saw. It was canvas, had crisscross wooden legs, with big canvas walls. There was a hole with a pipe in it so water could run out. They heated the water on the range. Frank & Ella lived on the east side of the street, by the fairgrounds, 4-5 houses south of the fairgrounds in Lake Odessa, MI ALA (SATTERLEE) MYERS RETIRED HASTINGS TEACHER SUCCUMBS THURSDAY MORNING Mrs. Ala S. She had begun teaching in Hastings school in September of 1921, and for 30 years taught the fifth grade at Central school. Mrs. Myers was a member of the Methodist church and was a member of the Chancel choir for 30 years. She belonged to the Hastings Teachers club, the Barry Education Association, and the Michigan and National Education Associations. Mrs. Myers resided in her neatly maintained residence at 320 W. Walnut street. Mrs. Myers received many plaudits when she retired two years ago, but one of the finest came from her own pupils who presented her with a cake with the words, "Farewell to Our Wonderful Teacher." She was born in Vermontville on Nov. 17, 1892, the daughter of Ernest and Laura Hays Satterlee. She married Royal Myers in 1924. Mrs. Myers is survived by a step-son, Sumner Myers, Goshen, Ind., two step-grandchildren; two brothers, Glenn Satterlee of Vermontville and Walter Satterlee of Charlotte, and a sister, Mrs. Clarence (Winifred) Koob, R.3 Hastings. SHIRLEY MYERS [June 11, 1914 The Hastings Banner--Woodland]--"Shirley Myers & family & John Leedy & family made the trip here from Scottsville Friday in the former's touring car. They expect to visit relatives in the vicinity for several days." [The Hastings Banner, Feb. 20, 1902]--"Shirley Myers, who has been working near Reed City, returned here Fri. to nurse 3 crushed fingers, which had the misfortune to be in the path of a fallen limb." [The Hastings Banner, July 31, 1913, pg. 11, col. 5 (Woodland)] Word has been received that Shirley Myers' little son who was reported dangerously ill at Freesoil, Mason Co., is out of danger. [The Hastings Banner, Thurs., Dec. 23, 1943, Sec 2, pg. 1, col. 4] BRINGING BODY HERE FOR BURIAL Royal Myers has received word of the death of his brother, Shirley George Myers, aged 63, who passed away on Saturday in a hospital at Pasadena, Cal. Several years ago Mr. Myers moved from Ludington to Yuma, Ariz., where a son resided, later going to San Gabriel Cal., where he was employed. He was a former well known resident of Woodland Township, where he lived for many years. Mrs. Myers preceded her husband in death. Surviving in his immediate family are four sons, two of whom are in military service, and a brother, Royal. The remains are being shipped to Hastings where funeral services will be conducted at the Leonard Chapel on Friday, Dec. 24, at 1:00 PM, the Rev. L. Winston Stone officiating. Interment will be in the Lake Odessa cemetery. ARTHUR MYERS Strong, Active Young Man Taken Away in His Prime by Tuberculosis As intimated last week, the body of Arthur Myers arrived in Lake Odessa, but not until Saturday instead of Friday. It was taken to the home of his uncle, Frank Myers, where the funeral was held Monday forenoon, Rev. J. W. Bostwick of Woodland officiating. Friends who viewed the remains could hardly recognize in them the former Arthur Myers. He still weighed about 170 pounds when he died, but having been dead a whole week, a considerable change was to be expected. His brother, Shirley, of Scottville, had been notified of his serious condition and he was with him the week before death, so was there to see him properly cared for and to accompany the body back to the former home for burial. Arthur Myers was born on the I. H. Eddy farm Nov. 8, 1883. He grew up to manhood in N. Castleton on the old Myers farm recently sold to Floyd VanWie. About ten years ago he began working for P. C. Flory at the barber grade, with whom he stayed about a year. From here he went to Detroit to work in the shop of his uncle Daniel, and later worked in other shops, until about 4 years ago when be bought a half interest in a shop. Along the first of October he sold out his interest in the shop and left for New Mexico, hoping to head off the disease which he realized had a firm hold upon him. Friends of the family say that in spite of his strong, healthy appearance, he was never as well as he had been before he had the measles, and that is the only source they can trace his liability to consumption. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Matilda Myers, two brothers, Royal of Hastings, and Shirley of Scottville, and one sister, Mrs. Allen DeLong of northern Michigan.
