Nashville News: 3 Feb. 1916 John Henry Martens was born in Wilster, Germany, Oct. 9, 1865, and departed this life Jan. 25, 1916, after more than a year's patient suffering, at the age of 50 years, 3 months & 16 days. His mother died when he was eight years old, leaving four children, two boys and two girls. His brother died in 1906. He has two sisters living, Mrs. N. Larson and Mrs. Anna Bachtold, both of Chicago. He came to America when he was fifteen and while he was here his father died. He returned to Germany and when he was 21 years old, and after spending a few years there and serving two years in the standing army he returned to America in 1892. In 1896 he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Lena Davis, of Nashville and to this union thirteen children were born, one daughter, Leah, having preceded him to the better world. He leaves a wife, eight daughters and four sons and a number of other relatives. Those attending the funeral from away were Mr. & Mrs. Roy Graham of Yorkville, MI., Mrs. M. Davis of Whitehall and Mrs. Dennis Gunthorpe and daughter of Battle Creek. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church of Kalamo. Interment in the Kalamo Cemetery. [note: he lived in Barry Co. near Nashville, most of his married life]
