Newton Died Suddenly of Heart Failure Otis F. Newton died very suddenly of heart failure at his home in the village last Sunday morning. He had not been feeling well for some time past, but was able to walk down to A.M. Herrington's store Saturday and greet friends on the street. Saturday evening he was not feeling as well as common, and Dr. A.O. Miller was summoned to his bedside early Sunday morning and remained until about six o'clock, by request of Mr. Newton, and when he left, the patient seemed much easier and was sitting by the stove with his son-in-law, A.M. Herrington. He wished to walk over by the bed and was assisted by A.M. and was standing up when he fell suddenly across the bed and expired in a very few moments. It was too great a shock for the devoted wife to bear up under and she has been prostrated ever since. Otis F. Newton was born in Sterling county, Pa., July 31st, 1822. Came to Michigan with his parents when 13 years of age, settling in Marengo, Calhoun county. Was married to Sarah Merical, May 3d, 1852. Came to Barry county 47 years ago, and had been a resident of Carlton township until about eighteen months ago, when failing health compelled him to leave the farm and take up their abode in Freeport. To them were born eight children, six girls and two boys, four of whom are now living, viz: Ermont, eldest son, resident of Marshall, Decolia Newton living near Hastings, Mrs. Anna Andrews of Clarksville and Mrs. Mina Herrington of Freeport. Otis F. Newton, a farmer from choice, has lived a quiet unassuming life for the past 45 years in Carlton, where he had few, if any, enemies. With his neighbors and fellowmen he dealt honestly. In his home life he was a faithful devoted husband and father, whose delight was in the happiness and comfort of his family. While he was not a member of any church, he was a believer in his saviour, read his word and often talked of his Heavenly Father and the angel of death who came to him February 12th at the ripe old age of 83 years, 7 mos. 12 days. The bereaved companion and family have the sympathy of all in their affliction. The last sad rites were held from the M.E. church Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. M.W. Duffey assisted by Revs. B. Hamp and W.D. Clark, and interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery. note: Mr. Newton died February 12, 1905. __________________________________________________________________________________________ "Mrs. Otis F.
