Mulliken 1905 - 1921 Additional Comments: Newspaper article: The Hastings Banner, Hastings, Michigan, 23 Aug 1921 Obituary of Erwin Alvin Mulliken (8-8), 1905 - 1921, age 16 “Erwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Mulliken, was born in Thornapple Township 18 Dec 1905 and passed away to be with his Jesus on 23 Aug 1921, about noon. Erwin suffered a series of misfortunes, had a broken leg, was poisoned by sumac, was bitten by a dog which resulted in blood poisoning, had rheumatic fever, hives and leakage of the heart. University of Michigan physicians failed to cure him, and one of Grand Rapids best physicians gave up his case. Then at his own suggestion the elders of the Free Methodist Church were called and they anointed him and prayed and he was healed. For three months after his healing, Erwin did not suffer from any of his previous ailments, and enjoyed walking, riding, fishing, playing tennis, sleeping and eating as would any normal lad of fifteen years. About a week before his passing away, he was taken with bowel trouble and obstruction of the stomach which caused his death. Efforts were made to secure the elders of the church to heal him from this sickness but they were unable to come for various reasons. Everything possible was done for him but it was of no avail. Erwin was conscious until the last, being on his feet five minutes before death came. On being told he could not live he said he was ready and when asked how he knew he said “I have no fear”. When asked if he knew his sins were forgiven, he said “yes, I know they are”. He asked “Why does Papa cry? I am in the hands of Jesus”. These and other incidents demonstrated the wonderful faith of this young boy. He was converted last winter, was baptized and joined the church, and a week before his death was sanctified. Surviving are the father and mother, two sisters and one brother, besides many relatives and friends. The funeral was held from the house on Thursday afternoon 24 Aug 1921, conducted by Reverend G.W. Kiffer. Interment was made at Riverside Cemetery, Hastings, Michigan”.
