Dick was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Flint. In 1947, he moved to Beulah with his parents, Roy and Annaretta, where his dad established Bowman's Sport Shop. Dick went to Benzonia High School and in 1950 joined the United States Air Force. He served in both Korea and Vietnam. Dick was with the K-9 division of the Air Police, providing base security. Over his 22-year military career, Dick was stationed in Germany, where he coached several Air Force basketball teams. While stationed at the U.S. Air Force Academy, he was a member of the pistol and rifle teams. He placed second for the pistol team in national competition. Dick served with distinction and was highly decorated. He retired as a Technical Sergeant in 1972. In 1966, Dick married the love of his life, Genevieve Scarborough. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Dick launched a campaign to become sheriff of Benzie County. Still living in Duluth, Minn., at the time, it was difficult and he fell a few votes short. In 1976, Dick established the Bowman's Sport Shop Road Race, a 7.6 mile foot race for the 4th of July. There also was a 5K race, which continues as the Beulah Firecracker 5K Race. For a short time Dick was in auto sales with the John Hays dealership, and later joined the Record-Patriot to lead its advertising sales department for 11 years, until his retirement in 1995. Dick enjoyed many activities, including attending all of his daughter's basketball and softball games, along with his hunting, fishing, bowling, woodworking, traveling (extensive worldwide and across the U.S.) and above and beyond anything, golfing. As an avid golfer, he had memberships at the local courses and fired three holes-in-one during his career. Dick was involved with the Benzie Sportsman Club in the 1970s. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roy and Robert.
