Born Aug. 2, 1929, in Benzonia, she was the daughter of Howard and Edna E. (Grant) Ballard. On July 20, 1947, in Benzonia, she married Keith O. Carmien. Jean lived in Benzonia all of her life. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Phillip's Episcopal Church in Beulah She was also a member of Grace Christian Church in Arcadia where she served as an organist. Jean was a bookkeeper for Carmien Electric Motor Service which she and her husband owned and operated for 26 years. She also worked in retail stores for many years. Jean enjoyed golf. She was a former president of a Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary and had a life membership at the VFW Home in Eaton Rapids. Survivors include her husband, Keith O.; four daughters, Barbara (Herbert Jr.) Lemcool of Traverse City, Andria Carmien of Traverse City, Lynn Moore of Benzonia, and Rebecca Carmien of Benzonia; a brother, John (Lavonne) Ballard of Benzonia; three sisters, Nancy McFarland of Frankfort, Alice (Edwin) Astleford of St. Albans, Vt., and Grace (Richard) Jones of Traverse City; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Christian Church; Pastor Chester Axline will officiate. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the organ fund at Grace Christian Church. ------------------------------------- Name: Keith O. Carmien Died September 21, 2005 BENZONIA - Keith O. Carmien, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. He was born on July 13, 1925, in Traverse City, the son of Roy and Lena (Betts) Carmien. Keith married Jean Anne Ballard on July 20, 1947, in Benzonia, and she preceded him in death on May 7, 2000. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. Keith was a member for 47 years at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, where he served as a Senior Warden and a vestry member. He was also a board member of Benzie County Commission on Aging for 15 years. In 1946 he joined the VFW and later became a lifetime member, where he served several times as commander. For many years Keith was a member of Benzie Housing Commission, Benzie County Veterans Board, Benzonia Village Council and the Lions Club. For 43 years he served with Benzonia Township Fire Department, 34 of those years he spent as Chief. Keith was a Master Electrician owning his own business, Carmien Electric Motor Service. He also was the Benzie County Electrical Inspector. Surviving are his daughters, Barbara Anne (Herbert W. Jr.) Lemcool, Andria Lee Carmien, Lynn Louise (Patrick W.) Moore and Rebecca Jean Carmien; special friend, Patricia A. Karaszewski; 11 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his three sisters and two brothers. A community gathering for family and friends will be today, Sept. 22, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff- Jowett Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m., at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Harold "Skip" Comer officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Those desiring may make contributions to the Munson Hospice House. The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff-Jowett Funeral Homes and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
