She was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Flint, the daughter of Harry and Gertrude Jane (Fall) Patterson. Gertie Bell had been a school teacher for 26 years, retiring in 1976. She had taught in Emmet County, Joyfield, Benzonia and Copemish. Many Benzie County residents had known her as their kindergarten teacher. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, collecting roosters and visiting with her friends. Most of all, Gertie Bell loved to help those in their times of need. Gertie Bell was a member of the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Benzonia, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Thompsonville Rebekah Lodge and the Benzie Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by her son, Roger Cutler of Benzonia; two grandsons, Michael (Maridee) Cutler of Benzonia and Jeremy (Michelle) Cutler of Williamsburg; one step grandson, Rodney (Chris) Griener of Grand Rapids; and five great- grandchildren, Bryce Cutler, Jacob Cutler, Paige Cutler, Mikyla Cutler and Justin Carter. On July 6, 1940, in Beulah, Gertie Bell married Chester N. Cutler, who preceded her in death in 1989. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Cutler in 1963; and three half brothers. Visitation will be held today, Feb. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Benzonia, with the Rev. Stephen J. Davidson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice, the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Benzonia or to the Benzie Historical Museum.
