Ehman SSN: XXX-XX-XXXX Last Residence: 49635 Frankfort, Benzie, Michigan, United States of America Born: 3 Jul 1909 Died: 23 Jan 2004 State (Year) SSN issued: Michigan (Before 1951 ---------------------------------------- Traverse City Record Eagle - Jan. 25,2004 FRANKFORT - Harlow Mills Ehman, son of Herman A. and Vesta E. (Pettitt) Ehman, was born on July 3, 1909, in Benzonia, and died on Jan. 23, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, at age 94. He graduated from Benzonia High School in 1927. After working in Detroit for a short time, he began his long career working in, and later owning and operating, several Standard Oil service stations in Benzonia, Traverse City, and Beulah. During the 1950s, he served as president of the Northwest Michigan Retail Gasoline Dealers Association. Harlow was active in public service. He was heavily involved in Boy Scouts with his three sons. From the 1930s through 1972, he served many terms as trustee, and one term as president, of Benzonia Village. He was trustee, vice-president, and president of the Benzonia Consolidated School and Benzie County School Boards. During the 1960s, the Benzie Central School System was established, partly through his devoted work. He was Benzonia Township Zoning Administrator for seven years. He also served on the Beulah/Benzonia Chamber of Commerce. Perhaps his most visible community role was as a member of the Benzonia Township Volunteer Fire Department for 14 years, during which he was Chief or Assistant Chief for eight years. His family fondly remembers many evening meals interrupted by the fire siren, calls from "Central," and his hasty departures from the dinner table, sometimes accompanied by eager youngsters. Harlow was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church in Benzonia, and was Deacon and Trustee for a number of years. One of his earliest memories, in 1913, at four years old, was going with his father to help dig a foundation for the West Wing of the old church. He enjoyed fixing things, playing golf, reading, and card games. He spent the last few years of his life at Michigan Shores in Frankfort, surrounded by loving friends. He will be remembered fondly by his family and many friends for his love of life, optimism, humor, honesty, and refusal to complain in the worst of circumstances. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte L. (Filter) Nametz of Frankfort; sons, Donald A. (Elsie L.) of Tucson, Ariz., and Lee H. (Barbara L. Wilcox) of Bloomington, Ind.; daughter, Jeannette M. Ehman of Holt; brother, John T. 'Ted' (Elizabeth P.) Ehman of Benzonia; five grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marguerite J. (Rankin); his second wife, Addie Jane Larson; son, Kenneth H.; sisters, Lowella E. and Winifred M; and brother, Philip P. Memorial services will be conducted at the First Congregational Church in Benzonia, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, with Rev. Stephen Davidson officiating. A graveside service is planned for the summer of 2004. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Benzie Historical Museum, where Harlow was an active member and volunteer. The Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, is handling arrangements. ------------------------------------------------- 1920 United States Federal Census > Michigan > Benzie > Benzonia > District 2 Herman Ehman 47 Vesta Ehman 42 Winifred Ehman 16 Philip Ehman 10 Harlow Ehman 10 Thomas Vaughn 60 ------------------ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/benzie/photos/tombstones/benzoniatownship/ehman71654gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ File size: 4.7 Kb
