Traverse City Record Eagle - Dec. 30, 2004 --------------- BENZONIA - John Theodore "Ted" Ehman, 82, of Benzonia, died at his home Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. He was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Benzonia Township, the son of Herman A. and Vesta (Pettitt) Ehman. After graduating from Benzie Central High School in 1939, he worked for Asa Case at the local gas station. He served his country in World War II, stationed in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy from 1942–45. He met Elizabeth Stout, a WAVE, on the Navy base in Norman, Okla., and they married Sept. 7, 1946. Ted then attended Michigan State University, where he earned a BS degree in mechanical engineering and was also inducted into Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity. Ted's first professional position was in Albion at Albion Malable Iron Company. In 1956, he joined Dow Chemical Company in Midland and became a registered professional engineer in 1959. While at Dow he was the project engineer for many new Dow plants, including a four-year assignment in Melbourne, Australia. When he returned to the U.S., he accepted a position at the Dow Hanging Rock Technical Center in Ironton, Ohio. Ted retired from Dow in 1986 and moved back to Benzonia, where he became active in the community. He served on the Village of Benzonia Council for many years, and put his engineering skills to use in supervising the replacement of the Benzonia water system in the late 1990s. He also was on the Board of Trustees of the First Congregational Church and was the treasurer of the Mills Community House for several years. Ted was an outgoing person and had a sense of humor enjoyed by most everyone. He thoroughly enjoyed singing and could be found in the tenor section of a community chorus or church choir everywhere he lived. His children have fond memories of helping him learn his songs when he was with the Dow Chorus and can still sing a rousing rendition of "Marching to Pretoria" or "The Gandy Dancer's Ball." While in Australia, Ted took up the fascinating and frustrating game of golf and enjoyed many hours of pleasure on golf courses all over the world. He was also an accomplished amateur finished carpenter, making a grandfather clock for each of his children and a fine hand-crafted heirloom for each of his grandchildren. He also enjoyed sailing on Crystal Lake and hunting in the local area and the Upper Peninsula. Ted was a member of the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, the VFW, Benzie Historical Society and the Elks. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth (Stout); his children, Gretchen Paupore, Thomas (Patricia) Ehman and Penelope (Ronald) Olson; his grandchildren, Kristina and Jeffery Olson, Carolyn, Jonathan and Susan Ehman and Carin Paupore; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Philip and Harlow; two sisters, Lewella and Winifred; and a son-in-law, Thomas Paupore. Friends may visit Sunday, Jan. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the Benzonia Congregational Church with Rev. Steve Davidson and Rev. Telfer Mook officiating. Interment will be held at the Benzonia Twp. Cemetery in the spring. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Mills Community House Association Restoration in Benzonia; the Benzie Area Historical Society in Benzonia; or First Congregational Church, Benzonia.
