Born April 5, 1940, in Bay City, he was the son of Mathias R. "Sy" Forbes and Mildred (Bradley) Forbes. He was raised in Bay City and the Midland area and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1958. Mick married his childhood sweetheart, Bonnie Jean Palmer, on Feb. 19, 1960, in St. Louis, Mich. Mick was a machinist with General Motors in the early years and later became a licensed builder and real estate broker. He was a business partner with his wife in many aspects of building and real estate. Mick was a member of Northwestern Michigan Home Builders Association, Habitat for Humanity, and an active member of Elberta United Methodist Church. He was involved in the church choir, recently becoming a communion steward to shut-ins and had started a "kids club" on Saturday mornings at the church, where many of the local children affectionately knew him as "Grandpa Mickey." Mick was proud of his Christian life; he had come a long way in his lifetime. He will be deeply missed by his four precious grandchildren, who were nothing but pure joy and constant sunshine in his life. Mick was a member of the Elks Lodge and an avid coin collector since his boyhood days. He served on many local boards and was involved with local community activities within Benzie and Wexford counties. He previously worked on the planning committee for the Frankfort City Council, was very involved in politics and in 1986 he ran for the U.S. Congress on the Democratic ticket. Mick was a member of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, and for the past 15 years he volunteered in assisting many senior citizens with their tax forms. Those surviving Mick are his beloved wife of 43 years, Bonnie; his mother, Mildred Forbes; two daughters, Kimberly (Bruce) McKenzie and Kristine (Tim) Plont; his grandchildren, Cathy and Matthew McKenzie and Heather and Timmy Plont, all of Frankfort. Also surviving are two brothers: Thomas (Jill) Forbes and Robert (Kathy) Forbes; and two sisters, Kathy Yoder and Virginia Dougherty, all of the Midland area. Mick was preceded in death by his father and his son, Robert Harold, who died at birth. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, April 20, at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Frankfort United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Greg Culver officiating. Interment will follow in Benzonia Township Cemetery.
