Bill was born May 23, 1922, in Detroit to J. Gordon Rankin and Ethel Diekman. In 1949, he was married to Barbara Losch, who passed away in April 2003. Bill served as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry from 1941-45, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. While raising his family, Bill was active in the community of Beverly Hills, including serving as a councilman. He was also very active in the Beverly Hills Little League during the 1960s, serving as president and coach. Before retiring to Frankfort, Bill worked in automotive advertising in the Detroit area, including 29 years with D'Arcy, Masuis, Benton & Bowles. While in Frankfort, Bill was a member of the Rotary, served on various church committees, assisted his wife in the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary activities, worked as a golf course ranger, and was a frequent friendly face in the Frankfort, Beulah and Benzonia area. Bill is survived by his daughter, Dale (Russ) Rankin Mack of Rochester Hills; sons, Neil (Lisa) Rankin of Portage and Todd Rankin of Troy; six grandchildren; and his brother, Robert of Vacaville, Calif. Private family services will be held in Rochester, with burial in Benzonia Township Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at a future date at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Rev. Robert Bennett officiating. The family requests that memorials be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 6790 Frankfort Hwy., Benzonia, MI 49616.
