Shaffer stepped into eternity, ending years of pain and suffering, to begin a life of joy and peace. Howard was born on June 29, 1921, in Clarksburg, W.Va., the sixth of nine children, into the family of Howard and Della Shaffer. When Howard was at an early age, the family moved to Northern Ohio, where Howard attended school. In 1941, he volunteered for the Army Air Force, serving for four years. It was during this time that he met his life partner, Edna M. Thomas. They were wed on Jan. 7, 1943. During nearly 61 years of marriage, they were blessed with four daughters. In response to a call to the ministry he had received at an early age, Howard began making plans to attend Theological Seminary upon his discharge from the service. His dream was fulfilled when he was ordained as a Pastor, and assigned his first two Methodist churches in northeastern Michigan. Thus began a career of serving many churches, across both the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, with unfaltering love and devotion. After his retirement in 1985, Howard continued serving as an assistant Pastor at The Church of God in Alpena, and wherever else he was needed. Howard never saw a stranger, especially loved babies, and was an accomplished musician. Surviving him are his beloved wife and caregiver, Edna; daughters, Victoria (Larry) Kritzell of Clyde, Ohio; Cathy Shaffer of Geneseo N.Y., Molly (Raymond) Franks of Beulah, and Sarah Earl of White Lake; 22 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; and his brother, Robert (Iretha) Shaffer of Boyne Falls. Also to be included are the hundreds of beloved and cherished families of his numerous parishes who were so dear to his heart, including members from Hillman, Spratt, Sidnaw, L'Anse, Baraga, Zeba, and Pickford United Methodist Churches, Alpena Church of God, and his prison ministry. Rev. Shaffer was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Della Shaffer; sisters, Madeline, Virginia, Helen, Georgia, Betty, and Mary; and brother, Leo. The staff and his friends at Tendercare of Traverse City were a special blessing to Howard and his family. They so lovingly cared for him during the last four years. He considered all of them his children. Calling hours are on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at 1 p.m., at the McElduff Funeral Home in Benzonia, preceding services at 2 p.m. "Well done thou good and faithful servant, your life is our inspiration, and your memory a benediction." ------------ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/benzie/photos/tombstones/benzonia/shaffer71988gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ File size: 4.1 Kb
