Stone died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at the Homesteader Assisted Living Facility in Benzonia. He was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Beulah, to Wright and Florence (Lipp) Stone. Eugene spent one year doing the agriculture short course at Michigan State Agricultural College before enlisting in the Navy. He enrolled in the Naval Air Training Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, and became a instructor for Naval pilots during World War II. Following his service in the Navy, he returned home to join his father and two brothers in fruit growing. Between the four of them, they managed four fruit and Christmas tree farms from the late 1940s until the mid 1960s. Then his son, Lee, joined him to continue farming. As he neared retirement, their business moved into a new phase, turning existing farm land into two golf courses, Pinecroft in 1991 and Champion Hill in 2000. Those who knew him fondly remember Gene as being someone who enjoyed taking the time to talk about fruit at his Farm Market or at the U-Pick. During retirement he talked about golf and tennis. He took pride in the fact that their business involved family and many good friends over the years. He is survived by his wife, Florence (Orr); children, Eugene Lee and Chris (Smith) Stone of Beulah and Cameron and Jane (Stone) Tonn of Beulah; grandchildren, Amy and Nathan Stone and Garrett and Aaron Tonn; and brother, Gilbert and Mary Jane (Bradley) of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wright and Florence; and brother, Glenn. Cremation has been held and a private service will take place in the spring. Contributions may be made in his name to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., Mary Ann Sprinkle, Director of Development, 1501 NW Ninth Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494, The Homesteader Senior Apartments, 7953 Love Road, Benzonia, MI 49616 or a charity of your choice.
