Published in the Record-Eagle on 12/11/2006. --------------------------------------------------- Tonn, Cameron Carl BEULAH — Cameron Carl Tonn, 62, of Beulah, died Sunday, Dec.10, 2006, at his home. He was born Sept. 8, 1944, in Lansing, the son of Carl and Vivian (Einer) Tonn. He had been a resident of Benzie County since 1965. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University. A former band director, he retired from the Benzie County Central Schools in 1992 after 26 years of dedicated service in the field of music education. He continued to support the band program long into retirement. While a teacher, Mr. Tonn was very active in the Michigan Education Association locally, regionally, and at the state level. He served in various leadership roles in Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District II. Upon retirement, he continued his love of sharing music by directing the Benzie County Community Band for 18 years. He also played with the Traverse City Encore Society of Music. Over the years, Mr. Tonn was a Boy Scout leader in both Frankfort and Benzonia, and helped young men work toward their goals. He enjoyed the Scout leader camaraderie and the many challenges that camp-outs presented. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia since coming to the area. He served his Lord and Savior in many capacities: church organist, Sunday School teacher, Lay Minister, and various church offices, ending with Chairman. Cameron loved spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed camping across the U.S. and Canada with his wife and sons. He spent many vacations in the Le Cheneaux Island area in the U.P., fishing with his father and his family. He enjoyed cooking for family parties and most of all he loved visiting and telling a good story about himself or someone he knew. He spent several years of his retirement working with family and friends at Pinecroft and Champion Hill golf courses. Throughout his life, he always put others and their needs first. He never deviated from his Savior throughout his life's journey, and has now realized the promise given to him at baptism. He is survived by his wife, Jane; two sons, Garrett and Aaron of Beulah; sister, Laurel (Frederick) Schmiege of Rochester Hills; brother and sister in- law, Lee and Chris Stone of Beulah; mother-in-law, Florence Stone of Beulah; and five nieces and one nephew, Tami (Michael) Wright of Denver, Marci and Amanda Schmiege of Chicago, Liza Schmiege of Rochester Hills, and Amy and Nathan Stone of Beulah. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Visitation will be at held on Friday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia, with Pastor Robert Bennett officiating. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service at the church. Interment will be in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia. Please share condolences with the family at Mr. Tonn's online guest book at www.legacy.com/record-eagle/.
