Aug. 14, 1917 - d. Mar. 4, 2004 M SGT US ARMY WORLD WAR II --------------------------------------------- Mar. 6, 2004 - Traverse City Record Eagle - Obituary FRANKFORT - William James Cardwell Jr., 86, of Frankfort, formerly of Farmington Hills, died on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. Bill was born on Aug. 14, 1917, in Owosso, the son of William J. and Margaret (Kirkwood) Cardwell Sr. He grew up in Owosso, but was a longtime summer resident of Frankfort, summering with his parents and family on Lower Herring Lake. Bill served with the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge. He retired from Michigan Bell as a supervisor in 1977, after 40 years of service. Bill was a member of the American Legion and the First Congressional Church, both in Frankfort. He had a wide variety of interests and hobbies and was skilled in many areas, including gardening, photography, music and golf. Every year, he planted vegetable and flower gardens at home; he and his family took great satisfaction in his work. Bill also provided service to the town, tending to the flowers on Main Street. An accomplished photographer, Bill's work demonstrated his love of nature, his gentle spirit and the close relationships with friends and family. He also had a broad interest and knowledge of poetry and literature. Bill's love of life was rooted in his deep faith in his God, instilling a wonder in the world around him and the confidence to undertake any task, the most successful of which was being a loving, devoted father and husband. On March 17, 1950, in Detroit, he married B. Joyce Nelson, who survives. Bill is also survived by his three children; William J. (Suzanne) III of Towaco, N.J., Karen Cardwell of Frankfort and Barbara (Bruce) Bryan of Raleigh, N.C.; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Mike and John; and two sisters, Helen Lynch and Hazel Boehm. A service celebrating Bill's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2004, from the First Congregational Church in Frankfort, with the Rev. Dinah Haag officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Memorial contributions me be directed to the Benzie Shores District Library or Benzie County Senior Center. The family is being served by the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
