Gillison - Died May 21, 2004 BLAINE TWP. - Rodney R. Gillison, 76, of Blaine Township, Benzie County, died at his home Friday, May 21, 2004, following a long illness with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disorder. Rodney was born in Lansing on Feb. 4, 1928, the son of Leslie E. and Edra Mae (Gray) Gillison. He was raised by his stepfather, Rufus Putney. At a very young age, Rodney became the man of the house. Growing up during the Depression, he valued life and his family. Rodney lived in Benzie County for the majority of his life. He worked for Production Industries for several years and was a partner with his sons in Gillison Variety Fabrication, Inc. Rodney was also one of the original partners in Graceland Fruit Co-op. He had a complete understanding of all things mechanical and was able to disassemble and rebuild anything and make it work better and more efficiently. Rodney served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army's 11th Airborne, receiving an honorable discharge. He took great pride in his country and his family. He loved to travel, if you could get him out of Benzie County. He never missed the news, which kept him abreast of local and national events, and he was especially observant of anything that affected the integrity of the United States. Farming was his love, next to his family. On Sept. 26, 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Nugent, who survives. Rodney is also survived by his two daughters, Carolyn (Mike) MacDonald of Frankfort, Jill (Darrin) Lung of Gladstone; three sons, Jim (Elie) Gillison and Ron (Dianne) Gillison, both of Arcadia, and Bill (Mary) Gillison of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Lester (Dawn) Putney of Allegan; two sisters, Nancy Margot of Bradenton, Fla., and Pauline (Duane) Cornell of Manistee; and several nieces and nephews. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Donna Bowman; and a brother, William Gillison. Visitation will take place today, May 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Blaine Christina Church, with Rev. Bob Larimer officiating. Interment will follow in Blaine Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider either the Shepherd's Ministry of Blaine Christian Church or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
