He married Mary Louise Boerner (Shumway) of Mesick on Oct. 3, 1948, she survives. Surviving is one daughter, Linda Lou Thornell, three grandsons, Charles Arthur Farris Jr., Jeremy Scott Farris and James Lloyd Farris, and two great- granddaughters, Taylor and Desire Lyn, all of Traverse City One son, Kenneth Thornell and wife, Becky (Polidan), two grandchildren, Jason Thornell and Jessica Thornell, all of Belleville. His sister, Alice Cutler of California; brothers, Alfred Thornell of Baldwin, Carl (Skip) Thornell of Ludington and Denny and wife, Sharon of Grandville; and many nieces and nephews. Lloyd joined the Army as a paratrooper from 1945 to 1947. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He worked for the Mesick Telephone Co., and then worked on the car ferry "Badger" out of Ludington. He next worked for Kelenators in Grand Rapids. Moving from Mesick to Traverse City, he was an attendant nurse at the Traverse City Psychiatric Hospital. After failed attempts in Lansing to keep the facility open, he retired after 30 years in 1984. He built a house on the Old Shumway farm and Lloyd and Mary Lou moved back to Mesick in 1988. His wife of 53 years now resides in Traverse City. Memorial services will be Friday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at the McElduff Funeral Chapel on Forest Ave. and 8th Street in Frankfort.
