He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Flint, the son of George and Lucretia (Skutt) Hillier. Elmer served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a pilot instructor until being honorably discharged in 1945. He had been self-employed as a machinist and inventor, working in the tooling business. In 1973, Elmer and his wife, Betty, moved to Benzie County. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Frankfort. Elmer enjoyed working on old cars and being outdoors. Most of all, Elmer loved spending time with his family and taking his grandchildren for rides on his tractor. On July 19, 1948, in Flint, Elmer married Elizabeth "Betty" May Barton, who survives him. Also surviving are six children, Karen (James) Wharry of Garland, Texas, Mark (Sheila) Hillier of Wewoka, Okla., Creg (Tina) Hillier of Beulah, George (Toni) Hillier of Honor, Michael (Kathy) Hillier of McKinney, Texas, and Kathy Fortine of Beulah; 13 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; three sisters, Jean O'Kazin of Flint, Marilyn (Kenneth) Johnson of North Carolina and Phyllis (Marvin) Carpenter of Texas; several nieces and nephews; and his close friends, Bob and Verna Boggs of Empire, and Leon and Sandy Fewins of Honor. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Matthew Thomas Hillier. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 24, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Frankfort. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Interment will be in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery, North, in Frankfort.
