John Hilton was born February 21, 1916 in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Lyons Township High School and attended the University of British Columbia. A WW II Veteran, he fought on the front lines in France. During his career he worked for Laidlaw Brothers, Bookwalters, and W.A. Kreeger & Co. Later he became President of Brock and Rankin, a book manufacturing company in Chicago. During the 1960s he was President of Western Springs Park Board, and responsible for the purchase of numerous lots which are today neighborhood parks. He was also involved with fundraising for the Hinsdale Hospital and the Paul Oliver Hospital in Frankfort, Michigan. He was a member of the Hinsdale Golf Club and Crystal Downs Country Club. After retiring, he and his wife, Ethel, lived for many years in Savannah, Georgia, summering at Crystal Lake in Frankfort, MI. He was on the board for the Women's Safe Shelter in Savannah, Georgia and he and Ethel spent much time traveling throughout the world. Mr. Hilton enjoyed his family, golf, fishing, bridge, and cribbage and never lost his sense of humor. As an old friend once remarked 'He was a gentleman of the old school. Mr. Hilton was preceded in death by his parents William Percy Hilton and Grace Burton Bullock and brothers Stephen, William and Casper. He is survived by his grade school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Ethel Grace nee Laidlaw; his six children and their spouses, Heather (Roger) Perry of Burlington VT, Laurel (R. Bradford) Heywood of Western Springs, Leslie (Edward) Butt of Frankfort, MI, John, Jr. (Charlotte) of Vero Beach, FL, Spence (Julie) of London, England, Peter (Bonnie) of Western Springs; his ten grandchildren a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will be held at the Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North. Memorials may be made to the Congregational Summer Assembly (CSA) at 2128 Pilgrim Highway, Frankfort, MI. 49635 or to a charity of your choice.
