Koop, of Frankfort and formerly of Flint, died July 30; McElduff Funeral Homes, Frankfort. ------------------------------- TRAVERSE CITY RECORD RAGLE - 1 Aug. 2004 FRANKFORT - Chester Sedgewick Koop, 87, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Chester was born on July 10, 1917, in New York, N.Y. Chester attended Duke University from 1935 until 1938, Duke Medical School from 1938 to 1940 and Long Island College of Medicine from 1940 to 1942. He received his medical degree in 1942. He interned at the New York City Hospital until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served as a lieutenant, working at the Pinecrest Sanitorium from 1943 to 1944 and 1946 to 1948. He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp as a captain from 1944 to 1945 and the Rocky Knoll Sanitorium, in Wisconsin, from 1948 to 1950. Chester was the medical director for the Genesee Sanitorium, in Flint, from 1950 to 1953. He had a private practice in Flint from 1953 to 1971. Chester was the chief of pulmonary disease from 1950 to 1970 at Hurley Hospital and at McLaren Hospital, in Flint, from 1955 to 1970. He was president of the Flint Academy of Medicine in 1960 and the Flint Heart Association in 1958. He also served on the board of trustees of TB and RD from 1960 to 1971, where he became president in 1968. Then Chester moved to northern Michigan where he worked at the Traverse City State Hospital as the medical director until his retirement in 1982. Chester was also an examiner for disability evaluation for OASI, General Motors and Metropolitan Insurance Company. In 1940, Chester married Grace W. Smith, who preceded him in death. In June of 1963, he married Mary Borey, who survives him. Also surviving are sons, Chester (Jan) of Davisburg and Charles (Christina) of Williamsburg; daughters, Suzanne (Ted) Wirick of Macclenny, Fla., Karen Newman of Benzonia, Diana (Ron) Conklin of Fenton, Pamela (Keith) Forton of Kewadin, Sally (Tom) Tompkins of Lansing and Cindy (Park) Herren of Benzonia; 13 grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Pat Gibbons of Flushing; and several nieces and nephews. Chester was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles; sister, Mary; and adopted brother, Charles "Buddy" Kennedy. Visitation will be today, Aug. 1, 2004, from 2 to 4p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at 11 a.m., at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Beulah, with the Rev. Harold "Skip" Comer officiating. Interment will be in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North. Memorials may be directed to the Koop Memorial Bench Fund, c/o the city of Frankfort or to the St. Philip's Episcopal Memorial Pew Fund. Koop Died April 18, 2005 FRANKFORT - Mary A. Koop, 85, formerly of Flint, died Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Maples. She was born on May 11, 1919, in Malden, Mo., the daughter of the late Floyd and Cella King. Mary married Dr. Chester S. Koop on June 14, 1962, in Flint. She was a charter member of P.E.O., a member of Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer. She was also a member of the Periwinkle Garden Club, Crazy 8's Bridge Club and the Frankfort Study Club. She was a volunteer "Grandma" at the Elementary School. Mary is survived by daughters, Karen Newman, Pamela (Keith) Forton and Cindy Herren Koop; four grandsons; two granddaughters; sister, Patricia Gibbons; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are five stepchildren and their families, Suzanne (Ted) Wirick, Diana (Ron) Conklin, Sally (Tom) Tompkins, Charles (Christina) Koop and Chester (Jan) Koop. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 22, 2005, at 11 a.m., at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, with Reverend Harold "Skip" Comer officiating. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Crystal Lake Cemetery, North. Memorial contributions may be directed to the P.E.O. Educational Fund. In June the BeachHolme Bench honoring the Koop's will be placed on the Frankfort Beach. The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
