He was born on June 21, 1926, in Detroit, the son of Eric and Anne (Prager) Lowenthal. Richard was awarded a Presidential Commendation and a Bronze Star for valor for his service at Okinawa and Iwo Jima, while serving during World War II as a member of the Underwater Demolition Squad 12 of the United States Navy, a forerunner of the Navy SEALS. Richard was owner and proprietor of the Frankfort Tackle Box for 25 years. He taught for 19 years in the Detroit schools, and served as Assistant Principal of Berkley High School until his retirement in 1987. Richard was a caring teacher, cherished friend and optimistic fisherman. He was Secretary of the Benzie Fishing Coalition, life member of the Free and Accepted Masons, and an active member of the Frankfort Lions Club. Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley. He was a devoted father to Debra, Barbara, Eric, and the late David; a dear brother to Robert and Doreen Lowenthal, and Shirley Braverman; and a grandfather to Alexis, Matthew, Joseph, Louis and Lillian. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, from the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, with Rabbi Stacie Bahle officiating. Interment will be in the spring, in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North.
