A longtime resident of the Maple City area, he also had been a resident of Detroit. Joseph was the former owner and operator of M-72 Auto Parts. He loved to dance, and as a musician and over the years, played in many groups including Zip and the Zippers and Joe and the Melody Boys. Born June 16, 1924 in Chicago, he was the son of John and Antonette (Horak) Kurina. On Mar. 26, 1945 in Detroit, he married the former Mary Melvina Miller, who survives. Also surviving is one son, Larry (Diane) Kurina of Maple City; three sisters, Millie, Rose, Anna; and brother, Anthony; four grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Agnes. Following Joe's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Rita/St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maple City on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., where friends may call at the time of the service. Deacon John Moeggenberg will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Joseph Kurina Memorial Fund in care of his family. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
