Avery SSN: XXX-XX-XXXX Last Residence: 49617 Beulah, Benzie, Michigan Born: 17 Oct 1945 Died: 19 Nov 2007 State (Year) SSN issued: Michigan (1962 ) -------------------------------------- Avery, Irving LeRoy "Irv" BEULAH — Irving LeRoy "Irv" Avery, 62, ascended to Heaven at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Nov. 19, 2007, after a lengthy illness. Though the sands of time have slowed down, he is now walking hand-in-hand with his daughter Pamela Mae Avery and his grandson Devon Andrew Byers, and other family that preceded him to his Heavenly father. He was born in Ypsilanti on Oct. 17, 1945, the son of Noel W. Avery and Dorothy Mae (Evans) Avery. In 1963, he graduated from Benzie Central High School. He married the love of his life, Hazel Elizabeth "Liz" (Rock) Avery on Oct. 29, 1963. They eventually made their home in Beulah in 1973. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known to some as "Papa Bear" and to others as "Papa." He always loved holding each and every new grandbaby as they entered this world. He always provided for his family. He was a hardworking man who served in the maintenance department at Cherry Growers Inc. for over 20 years. After becoming disabled, he always felt he had to do something to contribute to his family. When it was nice outside, he loved to go and get the mail in his wheelchair, even if it meant he might get stuck in the soft dirt doing it. He really enjoyed a good game of cribbage and chess, and he loved watching the old westerns on television. He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Elizabeth "Liz" (Rock) Avery; daughters, Dorene (Micheal) Strang of Beulah, Rebecca (James) Gonyon of Grand Rapids and Beverly (Matthew) Byers of Beulah; son, Matthew (Sterling) Avery of Beulah; 11 grandchildren, Kurtis (Krystle) Strang, Heather Strang, Danica Strang, James Russell, Nathaniel Russell, Chelsea Russell, Ayla Byers, Aidon Byers, Ciara Byers, Chandler Holley and Trinity Avery; one great-grandson, Kristian Strang; one sister, Nola (Rennie) Crawford; seven brothers, Donald (Betty) Avery, William (Tona) Avery, Thomas (Diane) Avery, Stephen (Patricia) Avery, Dan Avery, Leo (Dianna) Avery and Charles (Ann-Marie) Avery; and several nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends. Irving was preceded in death by his parents, Noel W. Avery (1967), Dorothy Mae (Evans) Avery (1967); daughter, Pamela Mae Avery (1970); brother, Noel W. Avery Jr. (1986); grandson, Devon Andrew Byers (1998); and grandparents, Stephen N. Avery, Ida M. (Briggs) Avery, and Charles E. Evans and Cassie L. (Dyke) Evans. Per Irving's wishes, in lieu of a funeral, a celebration of Irving's life will be held at the Bendon Hall in Bendon from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday Nov. 23, 2007. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to help with final expenses. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements; www.bennett-barzfuneralhome.com Published in the Record-Eagle on 11/21/2007.
